A Handy Tip for Burns, the Minor Variety

On Sunday I was cooking on the stove top, boiling a pot of water. The pan I wanted was sitting behind the pot and I didn't realize that the steel handle had been inches away from the flame in front. As I reached for it I pressed the handle with the side of my thumb and quickly, very very quickly, was running for the sink as I ran my poor skin under the cold water. OUCH!!!! I'm hollering away, Vito comes running in and grabs the pan with a towel and puts it in the sink (I don't know why...) but the water ran onto the handle and bubbled and steamed away. It was VERY hot. I knew this was going to leave a mark. So I ran it under the water for about five minutes and then switched to hold a can of coke against it for about an hour. Each time I took the can away, the sting/pain of that burn was intense! There had to be a better way to soothe this and there WAS!! a little research on line directed me to essential lavender oil and vitamin E. I applied both to my skin, wrapped it with some loose gauze and waited. Stinngggg yes but only for about 10 minutes and then... it went away. Completely. Utterly. I was even able to take a shower later that night without any burning feeling. The skin has a deep but small blister, not close to the top of the skin, and the rest is red and feels a little "flat" or to smooth but no pain.

Buy some Lavender oil and Vitamin E and keep them in the medicine cabinet. I'll use this remedy again because we all know I'm gonna hang on to a hot handle again...

I've got some in the cabinet and will get some more for the first aid kit. Glad you're healing nicely. OUCH!!!
I remember when your dad spilled hot oil on his hand. He threw the entire pan out the kitchen window - oil and all. I ordered him into the car and we went straight to Kaiser. He healed in about a week. Very scary!

I just learned that you can stick you burned hand into some crushed tomatoes (the canned kind is fine). It works really well and I've no idea why.
